A NEW APPROACH TO LOCAL FRAME ANALYSIS

The report notes that for local frame analysis of ship stiffener elements by far the most important end constraint is the rotational resistance provided by adjoining structure. By assuming that the structural connections are efficient in that they faithfully transmit rotation, an elastic analysis is developed for quickly determining these rotational constraints with enough accuracy for most design purposes. The method is the antithesis of moment distribution in that it works inwards from the boundaries towards the local element of interest. Only the structure very close to the local element need be considered since it is demonstrated that, even with the worst possible errors in the constraint assumptions made at their boundaries, the final errors for deflection or moment of the local element are very small. The method was extended to cater to more general loads by using carry-over and superposition, and this is illustrated with a building frame analysis. It has also been used successfully to aid ship vibration and buckling analyses.
