IMPROVED SHORE-SHIP COMMUNICATIONS THROUGH THE USE OF IMPROVED HIGHLY DIRECTIVE HF LINEAR ARRAYS

The communications systems described represent, in the authors view, the most significant improvement in HF communications in several decades. The significance is clear in both economic and performance terms. The return on investment can be greatly enhanced for most shore stations, typically with more than a 50 percent rise in traffic with less than a 20 percent rise in capital and operating costs. The communications system can now be designed using classical optimization criteria by gradually and economically increasing station capability until an optimum economic point is reached. The range any one station can serve at a given reliability can be greatly increased, providing the system designer the opportunity of increasing coverage with fewer operating stations. Improvements in reliability for a given range are quite dramatic--typically, a range which has been served with 50 percent reliability will be served with 95 percent reliability. These improvements are substantial enough to change materially the economics of long distance shore-ship and ground-air stations.
