THE GRAN EXPERIMENT

This paper outlines the development program for the Global Rescue Alarm Net (GRAN), which is being undertaken concurrently by the Coast Guard, Navy and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. GRAN is a concept for providing real-time distress alerting and locating anywhere in the earth through the use of synchronous satellite relay. The program incorporates five separate tasks: Omega ambiguity resolution, ground station modification, Search and Rescue Communicator (SARCOM) production, Testing and Analysis. Future areas of study are also cited.
