MULTIPLE USES OF SATELLITE NAVIGATION SYSTEMS ABOARD MERCHANT SHIPS

The Navy Navigation Satellite System (NNSS) was released by the President of the United States for commercial use in July of 1967. This system provides day and night, all weather, world wide, precise navigation coverage. It has been operational since January 1964. Magnavox has been involved in the development of equipments for this system since 1964 and has developed a number of user equipments tailored to specific applications. One of these equipments has been designed especially for merchant ships. This equipment includes a general purpose digital computer with the flexibility to perform a variety of functions in addition to computation of the satellite position fix. These uses include continuous navigation, cargo loading calculation, administrative functions and others. This paper describes the NNSS system, the user equipment and the application of this equipment to several shipboard tasks.
