DESIGN PRACTICES FOR POWERING PREDICTIONS
This work reviews the current procedures, margins, allowances, etc., in light of the most recent literature and documents the design practice procedures for powering predictions in a form suitable for preparing NAVSEC technical practice. This work presents a general discussion of the practice in use for the estimation of powering performance during the various phases of design, the fundamentals of extrapolating model resistance data up to an estimate of the fullscale ship resistance, the techniques for estimating residuary resistance, appendage resistance, wind drag, power margins, and shaft power, the techniques for estimating the effects of design alterations and the various aspects of rough water performance. Some supplementary information on the correlation allowance and the interaction coefficients has been included as appendices. (Author)
