CANTILEVERS TO WIDEN U.K. SUSPENSION BRIDGE

A 2-year rehabilitation of the Tamar Suspension Bridge in Plymouth, United Kingdom, will include building two new lanes that cantilever from the support structure and pass along the outer edges of the bridge's existing tower legs. The expansion will result in a near doubling of the deck width while increasing the bridge's carrying capacity. Cable stays connecting the new portions to the suspension cable will provide additional support for the new lanes. The stays also will raise the curved profile of the suspension cable, which has been sagging since the bridge was built in 1961. A 27.69-m-wide lightweight steel and concrete deck will replace the existing 15.24-m-wide concrete deck. The deck's light weight, in conjunction with new cable stays, will increase the bridge's carrying capacity by about 30%.
