OPERATIONAL SPECIFICATION FOR MARINE COLLISION AVOIDANCE SYSTEMS
The objective of this paper is to review the general capabilities that have been achieved with collision avoidance systems installed and operational over the past year. The discussion identifies limiting factors of the basic radar sensor and technical limitations of the computerized system. Operational data achieved with these systems is compared to data that can be acquired by the human operator using manual plotting techniques. The increased capability provided by these systems will be a major factor in the discussion. Based on the experience to date, a specification is provided which defines system accuracy that appears to be within the present state-of-the-art.
