LIGHT RAIL TRANSIT AND GROWTH MANAGEMENT IN VANCOUVER, BC, CANADA
Vancouver has a long history of regional planning that has promoted the creation of higher density mixed use suburban centers connected by intermediate capacity transit systems. This vision has enjoyed support from local, provincial and federal governments as well as the business community and the public-at-large. Local governments have ensured that appropriate policies and zoning is in place to allow for higher density development to occur. The provincial and federal governments have supported the plans by locating major office buildings and other facilities in town centers. The business community has made major investments in new facilities such as commercial development, office buildings and sports facilities near the SkyTrain and SeaBus. Finally, there has been strong public support for the regional plan vision.
