ACCURATE MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS FOR HARBOUR RADAR
With the increase in the influence of shore based radars on the activities of ships entering and leaving ports there has been a greater demand for better and more accurate information on ships position than has hitherto been possible. To date the majority of measurement has been done at the display using conventional analogue techniques with the consequent inherent inaccuracies caused by non linearity etc. Techniques are employed which enable all measurement to be done away from the display. The measurement is carried out in radar time using the p.p.i. only for displaying the answers. Using a small digital computer in conjunction with marine production radar units, we are able to produce a very accurate system at a realistic cost. The Port of Southampton in the United Kingdom has ordered such a system, the installation of which is nearing completion, and the use to which they put the equipment will be described. The Computer Assisted Measurement System, when used in conjunction with a Deccaspot System, provides a comprehensive technical solution to the operational requirement.
