THE INFLUENCE OF FREE CALCIUM OXIDE CONTENT IN CEMENT CLINKERS ON THE DURABILITY OF PAVEMENT CONCRETES
Under qualified stability and storage conditions, the influence of free calcium oxide content on the strength and durability of cememt mortars, conventional pavement concretes and rolled pavement concretes is studied in this paper. Two tests i.e. cement and cement mortar test and concrete test, are carried out to achieve the above. The results show that: (1) stability may still be qualified when the content of the free calcium oxide in the clinkers is between 2.5% and 3.2%, but unqualified when the content exceeds 3.2% to 3.4%; (2) the influence of the free calcium oxide content on tensile strength of earth-dry cement mortars is much more sensitive than that on the tensile strength of plastic cement mortars; (3) the tensile strength of earth-dry cement mortars decreases with the increase of the content of the free calcium oxide in the clinkers even if the stability is qualified; (4) the increased content of the free calcium oxide has no obvious influence on the compressive strength under the qualified stability condition and qualified storage condition, but it will slightly decrease the flexural strength and splitting-tensile strength; the flexural-failure behaviours, freezing resistance and anti-sulphate behaviours all decrease with the increase of the content of the free calcium oxide, and (6) the strength, flexural-failure behaviours, freezing resistance and anti-sulphate behaviours of rolled pavement concretes are obviously better than those of conventional pavement concretes. Finally, suggestions on how to select cements are presented to improve pavement quality.
