FIRST "A" GRADE TRAFFIC CONTROL CENTRE OPENED ON N1 FREEWAY BETWEEN PRETORIA AND WARMBATHS

The Mantsole Traffic Control Centre, on the N1 freeway between Pretoria and Warmbaths in South Africa, was opened on 27 May 1997, to improve road traffic quality and safety and law enforcement. It is operated by Northern Province Traffic Control, and is the first grade "A" control centre in South Africa; as such, it operates all day, every day. Overload control plays an essential part, to increase safety and reduce wear on roads. A high level of technology is available at Mantsole. Upstream road signs instruct drivers not to overtake and to slow down to 80kph. Drivers of heavy vehicles are channelled into a dedicated weigh-in-motion device and an over-height detector, linked to a computer. Legally loaded vehicles are redirected to the main flow of traffic with negligible delay, but apparently illegally loaded vehicles are weighed on a legally enforceable static scale. If they are found to be legally loaded, they proceed without delay; otherwise, traffic signals direct the vehicle to a holding yard, where prosecution is instituted and surplus goods are transferred to another lorry. A sophisticated computer data processing system ensures uniform treatment. Mantsole alone will screen about 500,000 vehicles per year, over eight times as many as those screened in the rest of the country during 1996.
