READY-MIXED CONCRETE FOR THE NEXT CENTURY
This paper examines some of the issues facing the ready-mixed concrete industry in the UK into the 21st century, and discusses their effects. Prediction figures for 1950 to 1996 are shown in a chart. Estimates of production for the years 2000, 2005 and 2010 are given, based on data predicting likely changes in cement production up to 2010. These forecasts are liable to error, due to the influence of political decisions on the economy. Environmental pressures, already being felt by the industry, are likely to increase. In some Continental European countries, it is common for concrete plants to recycle waste water and solid waste back into new concrete. Although the UK industry does not yet do this very much, the disposal of waste water and solids, other than by recycling, will become increasingly difficult. To ensure their compliance with new environmental regulations, ready-mixed concrete plants will probably become more sophisticated and thus more expensive. The industry will have to be much more careful with water, if global warming brings hotter, drier weather. By 2000, most of the British Standards for concrete and its constituent materials will be replaced by European Standards, including Standards EN 206 for concrete, EN 12620 for aggregates, and EN 197 for cement, which the paper describes.
