THE EXPERIENCE WITH NEW SMALL AND REGIONAL RAILROADS -- 1993-1997
This article brings up through October 1997 the experience in the U.S. with new railroads formed to take over lines abandoned or spun off by existing railroads, primarily major carriers. Previous experience was summarized in two articles in the Transportation Journal. In this article, new companies formed in the 1993-1997 period not included in the 1993 article are covered, as well as changes in those formed 1974-1993. A distinction is made between the new regional carriers and the smaller ones as noted here. One significant difference from the previous pattern is the development of a group of small railroads approaching the regionals in magnitude, with 150 to 400 miles of track; another is the continued growth of group operators, enterprises operating several separate railroads.
