FLY ASH PRODUCTION AND ITS UTILISATION IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

Fly ash is a by-product of coal-fired power stations. Over 7 million tonnes are produced annually in Australia but only a small amount (about 10 percent) is utilised, with the rest being placed on disposal sites or else dumped in ash lagoons. This paper presents a literature review of the utilisation methods of fly ash. Particular attention has been given to the utilisation methods in roads and pavements due to the potential for high amounts of the material to be utilised. Also, the state of ash utilisation in Australia and the rest of the world, as well as constraints on the use of fly ash, are examined. (a)
