BRIDGE ASSESSMENT AND STRENGTHENING - POLICY AND PRINCIPLES
This paper describes the broad principles of the new whole life performance related bridge assessment rules, being developed by the Highway Agencies. These rules will be radically different from the current rules which are primarily concerned with the adequacy of the bridges at the time of assessment. A number of difficult issues have been encountered during the implementation of the national bridge assessment and strengthening programme and the development of the new assessment rules, and these need to be addressed by the bridge engineering community.
