STATES IMPLEMENT ANTI-ICING STRATEGIES
As anti-icing and other innovative winter maintenance strategies take hold across the United States, highway agencies are improving safety, cutting costs, and reducing the harmful impacts on the environment caused by the use of chemicals and abrasives. A recent study by the Texas Transportation Institute found that highway agencies nationwide could save $325 million each year by adopting anti-icing techniques. In addition, the public could save an estimated $1.35 billion, through fewer accidents and delays. As the Federal Highway Administration educates more highway agencies through its outreach efforts, it also continues research into new and even more effective state-of-the-art technologies. Promising products include the automated bridge deck liquid deicing dispenser, the remote avalanche sensing system, and motorized crossing gates that can be remotely activated by telephone to block off roads in the event of an avalanche.
