CANTILEVERED CONSTRUCTION PROTECTS SENSITIVE CANYON
An Arizona bridge featuring the first cantilevered construction in the state will carry traffic over a deep canyon without marring historical and environmental areas. The 1,080-ft-long (329-m) bridge crosses a 125-ft-deep (38-m) canyon containing a riparian area for various flora and fauna and is part of a 30-mi (48-km) expansion of the Beeline Highway between Phoenix and Payson. Challenges included combining the cantilevered segments with the cast-in-place sections and transporting concrete down the steep terrain, while keeping intact the historic Reno Road, once used by Army cavalry.
