SHIPBOARD DATA MULTIPLEX SYSTEM-A METHOD OF REDUCING SHIPBOARD ELECTRICAL CABLE REQUIREMENTS
The purpose of this paper is to outline the magnitude of cost for installation and improvement of existing shipboard electrical and electronic systems, and to demonstrate how a multiplex system can reduce this cost. Discussion is limited to cabling requirements; design and operation of various systems is not covered. All information is presented from an engineering management point of view with no intimate knowledge of electronics required. In order to more fully cover the subject, the paper begins with a discussion of through ship cable requirements, wireway design and installation for electrical/electronic systems and the associated costs. This is followed by a discussion of Shipboard Data Multiplex System (SDMS). The paper presents a cost comparison between SDMS and a conventional fixed wire system for a major combatant. The paper closes with a definite set of conclusions that may be drawn from the discussion provided. The basis for this paper rests in experience gained through surface ship and submarine overhaul and conversion projects conducted at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
