PRELIMINARY PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT OF PAVEMENT AND FOUNDATION STRUCTURES

RAKENNERATKAISUJEN ALUSTAVA SUUNNITTELU JA KEHITTAMINEN

The disposal of local poor quality and less expensive materials, like moraine and peat, must be increased in road construction. The objective has been to develop new, technically sound and economic pavement and foundation structures, in which also the service life and life-cycle costs have been taken into account. The service life is affected mainly by traffic load (fatigue), frost action, efficiency of drainage and subgrade deformations. Structural solutions have been evolved both for new roads of different classes; classified by traffic volume, and for reconstruction/rehabilitation of existing roads. These will form the basis for the design of test structures and test roads as well as for the production technique projects.
