A REVIEW OF MOVING WALKS
Although moving walks have been proposed by various inventors for 100 years, the implementation of the proposals for use by the general public had been limited to expositions and fairs until the first constant speed walkway was put into use in 1954. Since then, the constant speed walkway has become commonplace and research has concentrated on accelerating systems. Successful operation of the prototype accelerating walkway indicates the feasibility of providing moving walkways that can carry pedestrians safely and comfortably at speeds of five miles per hour or more, without compromise of any of the provisions of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers code for walkways and escalators. Such walkways would provide at reasonable cost a greatly needed facility to handle pedestrians in congested areas, and would offer advantages in the design of stations for local circulation and distribution systems. /TRRL/
