A METRIC AMERICA: A DECISION FOR THE ENGINEERING COMMUNITY AND FOR THE NATION

At the direction of the Congress, a three-year Metric Study was undertaken by the Department of Commerce in August, 1968. As the study progressed, it became clear that the U.S. is already increasing its use of the metric system, and that sooner or later the nation will probably become predominantly metric. The study sought opinions from many different cross sections of our society. On three fundamental questions there was a clear consensus: (a) Increased use of the metric system is in the best interests of the U. S., (b) The nation should change to the metric system through a coordinated national program, and (c) The transition period should be 10 years, at the end of which the nation would be predominantly metric. Based on the data provided by the study, the report concludes that it would be far more advantageous for this country to change to the metric system by plan than to do so haphazardly and without a framework within which the individual segments of our society could be guided and helped.
