CORRELATIONS BETWEEN ACCIDENT CIRCUMSTANCES AND THE TYPE AND GRADE OF INJURIES IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS

10763 traffic casualties were analysed for distribution and severity of lesions according to age and accident situation. Head injuries were the most common form of injury among child passengers compared with adults. Leg injuries were most common when unprotected road users were hit by cars. Lethal injuries were 4 times more numerous in the over 65 age group. The number of head injuries was clearly reduced among users of seat belts. It could not be demonstrated that there was an increased occurrence of neck lesions or serious lesions to the thorax or abdomen in 199 users of seat belts. In 340 moped riders and 189 motor cyclists wearing crash helmets, an anticipated relative reduction in number of head injuries was observed, but not an increased number of neck lesions. /Author/TRRL/
