INFLUENCE OF SUCTION CONSTRICTIONS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF CENTRIFUGAL PUMP WITH SEMI- OPEN TYPE OF IMPELLER

A semi-open impeller type centrifugal pump offers the possibility of use in special cases where clogging of the pumped liquid is not desired as in the case of handling sewage or pastes. Due to continuous use of the pump the clearance between blades and the casing increases resulting in high leakage losses. One method of reducing this leakage is by putting a constriction (i.e., an annular baffle or orifice) on the suction side of the pump. Analysis of flow in a single-stage semi-open type pump with regard to the influence of constrictions is made by traversing a cylindrical yaw-meter at the exit of the impeller. The test data showed an increased efficiency of the order of 4 percent as compared with the pump without constriction for a given clearance.
