AGGREGATION PROBLEMS: THE QUESTION OF SCALE: MICRO-MACRO, URBAN-REGIONAL
The paper starts with an elaboration of the notions to be used for the treatment of aggregation and disaggregation. As a scientist one could ask to what extent a chosen level of aggregation affects the quality of explanation and prediction of urban development. In addition, the planner meets questions as to the influence of the level of aggregation on the quality of information to be used in the evaluation of alternative actions. From a literature survey six major problem areas are identified. These are illustrated by Dutch and foreign experiences from various fields of urban and regional modelling. Further, "rules-of-thumb" are given for use when working with these problems. Finally, the paper deals with and discusses A research set-up for analysing the aggregation problem more systematically. The covering abstract for the conference is IRRD no. 215277. /TRRL/
