THEORY AND APPLICATION OF GRAVITY MODELS AND ENTROPY MODELS IN SPATIAL SYSTEMS
THEORIE EN TOEPASSING VAN GRAVITEITS - EN ENTROPIEMODELLEN IN RUIMTELIJKE SYSTEMEN
The paper focuses on some methodological and analytical problems of using gravity models and entropy models. The first purpose of the paper is to examine the validity of gravity models on the basis of economic behavioural assumptions for decision-units. Next, the entropy approach is introduced. By means of a dual version of an entropy model (via a geometric model), the entropy model turns out to have a more behaviourally oriented interpretation (in terms of shadow variables). Finally, a comparison of entropy models with linear programming models is presented, as well as an empirical application to freight flows in the Netherlands.
