APPLICATION AND LIMITATIONS OF TRIP DISTRIBUTION MODELS FOR PREDICTIVE PURPOSES
TOEPASSING EN BEPERKINGEN VAN RITDISTRIBUTIE-MODELLEN BIJ VOORUITBEREKENINGEN
The way trip distribution models are being applied for planning purposes is critically examined. For that purpose the roles of trip distribution models and land use allocation models are described. Some characteristics of gravity models are pointed out, as to the way in which situational factors are applied and the fact that these models are in essence combinations of destination choice models and trip frequency models. Improvement, with regard to planning purposes, can be obtained on the one hand by incorporating variables into the models which determine the spatial structure, and on the other hand by separating the models into several components. The components distinguish themselves through modelling travellers' reactions which in reality need different time-lags, such as changes in destination choice and trip frequency. The conditions necessary for this separation are mentioned. The covering abstract for the conference is IRRD no. 215277. /TRRL/
