A GUIDE TO TRANSPORT DEMAND FORECASTING MODELS

This guide describes a range of transport demand forecasting models, which can be used for evaluating proposed changes to British rail services. These changes can range from introducing a major new service scheme to implementing a minor timetable change. The models can also examine the potential impact of policy changes. The guide is aimed at those in the rail industry, who are involved in forecasting demand for passenger rail travel. 28 models, which are potentially useful to rail planners, are described, but other relevant models may be available. Some of the models overlap, but others are unique. The models range from general-purpose transport planning software to relatively specific models, focused on particular geographical areas or transport corridors and a limited number of variables. The descriptions of the models are purely factual, and based on interviews with those responsible for developing and managing them; no attempt is made to assess the models. Therefore, it is important that users of the models take appropriate expert advice before attempting to apply them. Before describing the specific models, the guide briefly discusses the nature of models, their data requirements, how they work, their use for testing service changes, and their scope.
