IDAHO'S PRIDE--THE NEW PERRINE BRIDGE

The additional eyebars placed in the aging Carquinez Straits Bridge (in Oakland, California) were heated in rubber blankets imbedded with heating coils. When the heat created sufficient expansion in the beams, they were bolted to existing cross members. As the beams cooled, the slight shrinkage allowed the beams to assume their load-bearing function. The tensioning method was developed in order for the new stronger beams to assume their share of the load. The new eyebars are made of A517 steel, and each new unit can bear the total load if a pair of the older units should fail simultaneously.
