COMPUTER-AIDED SHIP DESIGN EDUCATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

A computer system has been developed at the University of Michigan, Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, in cooperation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Ocean Engineering, to serve as a tool in teaching ship design to undergraduate students. It consists of a library of computational modules, an executive program, supervisory modules, measure-of-merit modules, and data banks. It is intended to increase a student's learning by increasing the range of alternatives that can be explored, and by making easy the repeated application of measures of merit when design decisions are to be made.
