COMPUTER-AIDED SHIP DESIGN EDUCATION AT THE MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
The basic steps of a computer aided ship design methodology are identified and discussed. A brief description of the major computer modules developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in support of this effort is also provided. The modules discussed are: Lines generation, Hydrostatic analysis, Resistance estimation, Propeller selection, Seakeeping analysis, and Sea statistics. Finally, an example in the use of these modules in the instruction of ship design is given. The example deals with power margin estimation of ocean going vessels.
