A THEORETICAL BASIS FOR THE DESIGN OF CAD SYSTEMS

Much of the development of Computer Aided Design Systems is intuitive and little theoretical foundation exists. The experience of past systems is largely told as a series of anecdotes. This paper sets down a framework for understanding the external structure of CAD systems, based upon the semiotic approach to communication, divided into the three branches of form, semantics, and pragmatics. The aim is to enable a more systematic collation of experimental results and practical experience.
