SHIPOWNER'S REQUIREMENTS AND EXPERIENCE WITH IN-WATER MAINTENANCE

Considerable work has been carried out on techniques of surveys in water, and methods of cleaning and painting VLCC afloat are constantly developing. There is a growing opinion in the shipping world that VLCC may have to operate for long periods without a dry dock and it is considered that only by thinking in "no-dock" terms can the necessary solutions to the many problems be found. The paper considers the factors that gave rise to the "in-water" philosophy and states the requirements that must be met if such a policy was adopted.
