APEC TRANSPORTATION SAFETY AND SECURITY PROJECT, SATELLITE NAVIGATION AND COMMUNICATIONS, ELEMENT 2: SN&C TECHNOLOGY AND SAFETY REVIEW IN THE APEC ECONOMIES, PART 1: TECHNOLOGY REVIEW
As part of a program to promote transportation system safety in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) countries, this report provides a broad introduction to the technologies which make navigation and communication possible in the air and marine environments. The focus is on navigation, but communications is included to the extent that it supports navigation, surveillance, and management of air and marine traffic. The first chapter reviews global navigation satellite systems, including multimodal, aviation, and marine systems, and the global positioning system. The second reviews marine navigation and communications, including INMARSAT, automated identification systems, and navigation information management systems. The final chapter considers aviation navigation and communications, both present and new systems for oceanic and domestic air space operations.
