ANISOTROPY IN HEAVILY OVERCONSOLIDATED KAOLIN - DISCUSSION
Attention is drawn to a paper on the fabric of consolidated Kaolinite. Using X-ray diffraction techniques, it has been shown that the particles of Kaolinite slurries mixed at a water content of 2 or 4 times the liquid limit reach a very high amount of orientation normal to the direction of consolidation for very small 1-dimensional consolidation pressures; also, very high pressures are needed to get additional orientation. It has also been demonstrated that a kaolinite slurry whose particles have been oriented due to a small 1-dimensional consolidation pressure in one direction, requires an extremely high pressure at right angle to the first direction to substantially aline the particles normal to their initially preferred orientation. The operation also increases the fabric's heterogenity. Experimental results obtained by the author are compared with those obtained by Martin and Ladd, and the observation is made that when in fact were thought isotropic specimens were in actuality, not isotropic. It is noted that a study of mechanical response of anisotropic clays in a standard triaxial cell can only lead to tentative and often erroneous generalizations. Unless the principal stresses are inclined on the axis of symmetry, the influence of anisotropy cannot be studied in a detailed and ultimately complete way.
