A CASE HISTORY OF EXPANSIVE CLAYSTONE DAMAGE-DISCUSSION
An almost foolproof solution is described for foundations in highly expansive black cotton soils in India. A systematic investigation on ground movements in these soils revealed that underreamed pile foundations carried down to about 12 ft. in deep layers of these soils, provide effective solutions. The piles (diam. 8 in. - 15 in. with the bottom belled out 2 1/2 times) are spaced 5 ft. - 10 ft. depending upon the loading pattern, and grade beams are supported on these piles 3 in. clear of the ground. These foundations are 30-50 percent cheaper than conventional strip foundations with reinforced concrete band. A Code of Practice has been drawn up for these foundations of which these are more than 60,000 in India.
