SANITARY LANDFILL SETTLEMENT RATES-DISCUSSION
The observation is made that the thinner fills in more humid regions subject fluctuating moisture (conditions favorable to rapid decomposition) may settle more rapidly than thicker fills in which the deeper potions are isolated from the effects of a fluctuating environment and, particularly, opportunities for replenishment of nutrients necessary for full decomposition. It is noted that the settlement as expressed by the coefficient of secondary compression experienced by the authors, is less than the observed by the discusser. However, most of the discusser's experience has been in more humid regions in which conditions are more favorable to decomposition. The author's results showing rates of settlement are comparable to those found by the discusser for conditions unfavorable to rapid decomposition.
