SOIL-STRUCTURE INTERACTION ANALYSES FOR SEISMIC RESPONSE-DISCUSSION
Comments are made regarding the various conclusions drawn by the authors, and the observation is made that the lumped parameter approach accurately and adequately accounts for the influence of soil-structure interaction for the vast majority of problems. It is also noted that parametric variations in the soil and structural properties can be routinely considered with the lumped parameter approach. It is however, agreed that at certain complex sites, finite element studies offer a useful tool when used in a competant manner. Specifically, the discussers note that the control motion, especially in a finite element analysis, must be specified in an appropriate manner so that unrealistic motions do not occur. It is thought that the large differences between the lumped parameter and finite element method lies in the radiation damping. It has been found that the typical radiation damping values for nuclear structures in the Power Block area range from 30-80 percent in the horizontal and vertical modes respectively, and are even higher for deeply embedded structures. Observations are also made regarding material damping, compatible shear strains, moduli, effect of soil/rock layers, input motions for lumped parameter analyses, the effects of adjacent structures on building response, and embedded structures.
