STATES REPORT EXPERIENCES WITH HIGHWAY UNDERDRAINAGE MATERIALS

The experiences are recorded of the use by various states of various types of pipe as highway underdrainage material. In Wisconsin, specifications have permitted corrugated metal pipe, corrugated aluminum alloy pipe or bituminous-fibre pipe. In Ohio, the majority of the underdrain installations are of clay or concrete tile. Some contractors have wished to substitute plastic or polyethylene corrugated pipe. The acceptability of such pipe is determined by physical tests and inspection to determine that the pipe is homogeneous throught and free from foreign material incursions or visible defects. Specifications and experience in Arkansas, South Dakota, Vermont, North Dakota, New Mexico, Oregon, Michigan, Texas, Washington and South Carolina are quoted.
