SLURRY SEAL OPERATION PAVES TEST BIKE PATH

A trial application is described of slurry seal for renovation and improvments of shoulders for use as bicycle paths on a state route (333) in Maryland. A thin slurry of well graded stone aggregate, asphalt emulsion and water was applied on a worn, old surface. Cost beneifts are claimed for this process, based on both production rate and the reduction of men and equipment. This project used two Young slurry seal machines (734 SB models and 7.3 cubic-yard capacities) and a JCB front end loader for charging the machines with aggregate. The production rate was bout 100 ft. per minute. The sequence of operations is briefly outlined. If this project is successful slurry seal will be considered for statewide use in conversion of shoulders to bike paths and possibly in regular maintenance.
