EXPERIENCES FROM INSTALLING AND OPERATING A DISCRETE MULTIVARIABLE CONTROL SYSTEM FOR A SHIP BOILER
The paper presents experiences from installing and operating a linear discrete multivariable control system for a large scale ship boiler. The ship is the 285 00 tdw. tanker T/T "SONGA" built in Norway for Hagb. Waage Shipowners, and delivered in October 1974. The multivariable control system is a part of an integrated, computer based, machinery control system. The main functions of the multivariable control system and the computer functions realizing the controller are briefly described. The final version of the system matrices is compared with the version originally recommended from simulations. The dynamic behaviour and the stability of the multivariable control system and the analog back-up controller are compared. Especially the problems due to the nonlinearities of the process, and the influence of random- and coloured noise (due to rolling and pitching of the ship) are discussed. The paper ends up with some economic considerations.
