OLD TIRES TO REINFORCE ENBANKMENT, CUT COSTS 25%

As a result of California state legislation requiring new means of disposing of old tires, the Department of Transportation is planning to reinforce an embankment with the sides of old tires. The slope of the embankment will be steeper than usual, this being made possible by the sidewall reinforcement. The sidewalk will be joined together in mats with steel clips. This method will optimize the tensile strength of sidewalls, which are usually discarded after the treads are removed for recycling. Both real estate and fill costs will be cut since the steeper slopes will reduce necessary embankment right of way. The reinforcement is expected to provide additional atability in earthquake areas. The embankment, which is receiving funds from the Federal Highway Administration, will be monitored for the next two years.
