ORIGINS OF THE INTERSTATES
Roads and Bridges features in the June 1996, issue an overview of the history of the roads and highway system in this country from the very beginning. Highlighted are the travel routes taken by the earliest European settlers, the waterway passages, the Wilderness road over the Appalachian region, initial attempts at asphalt paving, the planning, design and creation of the Lincoln Highway and finally, the advent of the modern Interstate highway system.
