VIBROFLOTATION EVALUATION BY FUGRO CONE TESTS
At two Scottish locations, an upper sand layer was compacted by the vibroflotation technique to a depth of 4.5 m and the electric Fugro cone penetration test (FCPT) was used to confirm the effectiveness of the compaction and to provide quantitative data so that an increased allowable bearing capacity of the compacted soils could be made. Truck-mounted equipment was used for the cone tests, the results being recorded by automatic graphical display and data logging units. The rate of penetration of the cone was 20 mm/sec and only one day per site was required to complete the work. At one locatin, 3 FCPT's were located outside the vibroflotation-treated area as reference tests and six were made within the compacted area. The results obtained and the foundation recommendations that were initiated are reported.
