DIGGING FOR DOLLARS: THE ECONOMICS OF EARTHMOVING POINT TO EXTRA SAVINGS LYING JUST BELOW THE SURFACE
The views are expressed and projects are described by 4 major U.S. contractors in different regions of the country facing 4 distinct earthmoving challenges. They reveal the problem-to-solution approach that has saved time and money on a number of vital construction ventures. Careful equipment selection and equipment operators were considered most important in a project in which 10,000 yd. of unstable peat forced substitution of dragline and trucks for more conventional equipment in an 840-acre housing development site. A second contractor cut more than 20 percent from overall costs on a 2.2-million-yd site by substituting a belt loader for scrapers on portions of the task. A San Francisco contractor links economy with the terrain and the rubber used in hauling. Job site layout, even before sumbitting a bid, is the key to economic and efficient earthmoving is the opinion of a Birmingham contractor.
