EFFECT OF DEFORESTATION ON SLOPES-CLOSURE

It is noted that a normal tree surcharge of 50 psf provides a range of 0 less than or equal to be less than or equal to 0.7 for a minimum mantle thickness (H) of 5 ft. It is also noted that under most circumstances, the influence of vertical surcharge from the weight of the trees is not likely to be very significant one way or the other. The increase of mantle thickness, H, does mean that the creep rate is sensitive to the factor, d = H/H sub W; no general conclusion can be made about the relative creep rate before and afete logging.
