RECOVERING AND RESTORING OF DRAINAGE WEARING COURSES. PROCESSING CYCLE USED BY THE THERMOREGENERATION MACHINE. EXPERIMENTAL STUDY CONDUCTED AT SOCIETA AUTOSTRADE

The experimental study was conducted on a motorway stretch of the A/14 Milan-Brescia, which has been in operation for five years and has a TADV traffic flow (TADV - Theoretical Average Daily Vehicles referring to one carriageway only) 80,000 of which heavy loads (greater than 12t. per axle) account for about 40%. The paving showed signs of deterioration, such as: a low value of the transverse adherence coefficient (TAC) and high structure (HS), as well as a significant reduction in the binder drainage. From a study characterising the physical, mechanical and rheological parameters carried out on samples taken from the pavement and the project study conducted at Societa Autostrade's Data Collection and Materials Testing Center, new mix designs were formulated that took account of the processing cycle used by the thermoregeneration machine designed by "Soave Asfalti". Furthermore, original solutions were adopted by including additions of "structural" expanded clay (already used in 1986 as an inert substance in traditional wears) in the mix and a bituminous formula modified with multifunctional polymers was finalised. The results obtained after the test highlighted the complete recovery of performance parameters, thus confirming the data of the project study. Checks will be carried out at periodical intervals on the experimetnal stretch in order to follow the progress of significant parameters for draining pavements.
