PROVEN ORGANIC COATINGS FOR LONG-TERM PROTECTION--PART II
The application steps, surface preparation, coating application and inspection are described, and information is presented on landmark painting applications, and key painting trends. The importance of meticulous surface preparation is emphasized, specially if epoxies or zinc rich liquid silicates are used for primers. Water blasting may be used where abrasive blasting could damage machinery. The degrees of abrasive blasting arranged in descending order of thoroughness are presented. It is noted that the high costs of field labor have encouraged using 2 coats of a high-build coating as opposed to the standard three thinner coats. At least 5 mils is considered a desirable total film thickness, and 7 mils is desirable in salt water environments. In the powder coating technique, electrostatically charged powder passes from a spray gun to a heated, throughly cleaned metal object bearing an opposite charge; the powder melts and adheres to the metal. Epoxy powder coatings have been used on pipelines and on rebars for concrete on overpasses and bridges. Inspection of paint application is important; books on this subject are recommended.
