CONDITION MONITORING ON BOARD SHIPS--PART I: METHODS FOR IMPROVED OPERATION OF SHIP MACHINERY BY CONDITION MONITORING INSTRUMENTATION
The development of improved condition monitoring systems has involved detailed research into failure mechanisms in diesel engines and how they behave under widely different service conditions over long periods of time. It has been necessary to develop entirely new sensors, to improve conventional ones and study how these react to various engine conditions. Experience has shown that the major maintenance costs for marine diesel engines are linked to the heat-loaded parts of the cylinder units: piston, cylinder liner, cover, valves and injectors. The widespread use of residual fuels, whose quality seems to be worsening, aggravates operating conditions considerably and is detrimental to the reliability of these components. The measuring methods are the bases of a C.M. system. Equally important, however, is the method by which condition data are presented to the crew and adapted to the maintenance planning and reporting system on board. This paper mainly describes the work on diesel C.M. carried out at Det Norske Veritas.
