FUEL-SAVING COE TRACTORS FOR THE 1980'S
Two types of fuel-conserving truck tractors for long-haul operation are forecast by University of Maryland engineers for the 1980's: A tractor looking much like present units but incorporating a higher-torque, lower-rpm engine, a tag axle, radial tires, a declutching fan, and aerodynamic bolt-ons. A lighter-weight, aerodynamically efficient tractor, probably much like the new Ryder tractor shown incorporating the more economical engine, tires and fan.
