ACCELERATED LOADING FACILITY (ALF) - DOES IT ACTUALLY DO WHAT IT CLAIMS?
So far, numerous ALF (accelerated loading facility) trial experiments have occurred, producing valuable results. To date there is a qualitative belief in ALF's ability to model long term loading in an accelerated fashion. As yet there is no quantitative scientific conclusion on the issue. To facilitate this issue, as part of the National Strategic Research Program, ARRB Transport Research Limited undertook the ALF - Long Term Pavement Performance (ALF - LTPP) Study. The objective of the ALF - LTPP Study is to compare the performance of full scale inservice pavement test sections under real traffic loading conditions with that previously determined under ALF loading, as a means of verifying the results of the ALF trials and increasing confidence in the use of ALF as a relevant research tool. The paper presents the comparative analysis of the ALF trial experiments results to those of the corresponding ALF - LTPP pavement test sections, addressing the question posed in the title 'ALF - Does it actually do what it claims?'
